Description
A procession moves forward across a pale, uncertain ground—figures reduced to silhouettes, stripped of identity, yet unmistakably human. Above them hover faces that are anything but anonymous: archetypal masks, suspended like witnesses, judges, or inherited burdens. They are not shouting. They do not move. They simply observe. I painted these faces using the faces of some old English plaster casts of the seven deadly sins.
This painting explores the quiet persistence of moral weight—the way history, instinct, and flaw walk beside us even when we believe we are alone. The upper figures evoke the timeless architecture of human failing, while the lower forms suggest the present moment: individuals advancing, hesitating, or standing still beneath forces they did not invent but must still carry.
The palette is restrained, atmospheric, and deliberate—light emerging through fog rather than breaking it. Negative space functions as silence, asking the viewer to complete the narrative rather than consume it.
This is not an illustration of guilt.
It is a meditation on inheritance, awareness, and the distance between knowing and choosing.
A piece for those who understand that judgment is rarely external—and never simple.
